Rome, 2 June 2011

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, Vice President of China.

They discussed a wide range of topics including the recent Group of Eight summit, Sudan, the Middle East and North Africa, the Korean Peninsula, Myanmar and support for development.

On development, the Secretary-General said he appreciated China's significant support for least developed countries, notably in Africa, and that he hoped China would do even more in this regard. He said African development had been a key focus at the Group of Eight summit.

The Secretary-General and the Vice President exchanged views on recent events in the Middle East and North Africa. On Sudan, the Secretary-General said he was deeply concerned about recent developments in Abyei ahead of South Sudan's planned independence next month.

The Secretary-General noted that China played an important and appreciated role in seeking to encourage the DPRK to return to the Six-Party talks and in easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

On Myanmar, the Secretary-General said he hoped that reforms there would be genuine and democratic.
