Readout of Secretary-General's meeting with Prime Minister of Bulgaria
Sofia, Bulgaria, 5 May 2011The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Boyko Borisov, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria.
He thanked the Prime Minister for Bulgaria's continued support for the work of the United Nations.
The Secretary-General briefed the Prime Minister on developments in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly the situation in Libya.
They discussed climate change, international cooperation on disaster risk reduction, and nuclear safety and security.
They also exchanged views on the situation in the Western Balkans, and the issue of human and minority rights in Bulgaria and the wider European Union.
The Secretary-General thanked the Prime Minister for briefing him on developments in Bulgaria, including his government's fight against corruption and organized crime, and its work on counter-terrorism. The Secretary-General paid tribute to the Prime Minister's determined political leadership in this field.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations' readiness to help secure the release of three Bulgarian helicopter pilots kidnapped in Sudan.
