Atul Khare, Head of the Change Management Team
On 31 May 2011, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Assistant Secretary-General Atul Khare to lead the Change Management Team.
The Change Management Team will guide the implementation of a forward-looking reform agenda for the United Nations, starting with the formulation of a comprehensive plan to streamline processes, increase accountability and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Organization in the delivery of its mandates. The establishment of the Team is a further step in the efforts of the Secretary-General to strengthen the UN so it can play an increasingly prominent role in a period of rapid change and financial constraint, and build a management culture focused on excellence and results. Under the direction of the Deputy Secretary-General, the Team will report to the Secretary-General and work closely with departments and offices in the Secretariat and across the UN system, as well as with Member States.
Mr. Khare has served since 1 May 2010 as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy to the Head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Prior to assuming those functions, he was the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Timor-Leste and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste from December 2006 to December 2009.
Mr. Khare holds master’s degrees in business administration and leadership from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, as well as bachelor’s degrees in medicine and surgery from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Born in India in 1959, he is married to Vandna Khare, a writer.
