The Deputy Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Arseniy Yatseniuk, Prime Minister of Ukraine. During their meeting, they discussed the current critical situation in the country.

The Deputy Secretary-General emphasized the need for a diplomatic and political solution to the on-going crisis.

In that context, he underscored the importance for all to adhere to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Deputy Secretary-General took note of efforts made by the authorities in Ukraine to enhance inclusiveness and encouraged the continuation of a broad-based approach that addresses the aspirations of all people in Ukraine.

He emphasized the critical imperative at this time to preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
