Counter-Terrorism Technical Assistance Programmes

International Criminal Police Organization
Technical Assistance Programme Description

INTERPOL is the world's only global law enforcement organization, linking together essentially all of the world's police agencies throughout its 186 member countries. Police use INTERPOL's secure global police communications system (called I-24/7) to share information, to access INTERPOL databases, and to coordinate their work. In addition, INTERPOL provides police with operational support services and training.

INTERPOL has its General Secretariat in Lyon, France, and regional offices in Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Argentina, El Salvador, and Thailand, and an additional one to be opened in Cameroon in 2008.

Each INTERPOL member country maintains a National Central Bureau (called an NCB) staffed by national law enforcement officers. Each NCB is the designated contact point between the country's law enforcement agencies and the INTERPOL General Secretariat, the INTERPOL Sub Regional Bureaus, and other member countries requiring assistance with cross-border police work, such as international investigations, locating and apprehending international fugitives, and other international law enforcement matters and inquiries.

INTERPOL's Mission

The mandate and the primary task of INTERPOL is to support police and law enforcement agencies in its member countries in their efforts to prevent crime and conduct criminal investigations as efficiently and effectively as possible. Specifically, INTERPOL facilitates cross border police cooperation and, as appropriate, supports governmental and intergovernmental organizations, authorities and services whose mission is to prevent or combat crime.

INTERPOL serves this mission by providing a forum through which police can communicate and share information, intelligence, and analysis, by providing database tools, by providing training that helps police build their crime fighting capacities, and by helping police coordinate their activities worldwide.
