Counter-Terrorism Technical Assistance Programmes |
| Technical Assistance Programme Description | The security support and capacity-building activities of UN peacekeeping missions, and the administrative support for the re-creation of the instruments of governance -- particularly the police and armed forces -- strengthen the rule of law and can contribute indirectly to prevention of terrorist activities. Peacekeeping missions often provide support to local police and national law enforcement agencies for the protection of civilians, infrastructure, public places and major events. Support is provided to policing with tasks ranging from the provision of interim law enforcement to the reform, restructuring and rebuilding of police and national law enforcement agencies. DPKO-ORLSI assists and supports other rule of law related aspects of peacekeeping operations, such as justice and legal systems, and corrections. Human rights components also undertake activities in support of the promotion of religious and cultural dialogue and tolerance, human rights, good governance and the promotion of marginalized groups. UN peacekeeping operations can provide quick impact projects to develop local infrastructure |
