United Nations Secretariat
First Consolidated Annual Report 2005

The Secretary-General proposed in his 2006 reform report "Investing in the United Nations" an improved means of reporting on the organisation's results. The intention is to develop a single, comprehensive report, serving as a practical overview of the organisation's objectives, goals, and achievements, including comprehensive financial information. Currently, this information is embodied in many separate reports issued at different times throughout the year. While this report, produced by the Department of Management, cannot substitute for many of these, it is believed that their content could be made more user-friendly and subsumed into a single report. It is intended to be accessible to both those who are new to the activities of the organisation, and to UN practitioners and stakeholders alike. It is hoped that this first consolidated report will be considered by the public and the member states as a step forward in communicating the work of the United Nations, and it is expected to be improved over the years as the programming and reporting processes are refined. Please be reminded that this report focussing on the activities of the UN Secretariat is not the Secretary-General's Annual Report, which is presented to the General Assembly at the beginning of the fall session and provides an overview of the work of the UN System as a whole, including the Funds, Programmes, and Agencies.
