UNICEF Demands Release of Abducted Drivers and Water Drilling Rig in Darfur

24/03/2008
UNICEF, the UN Children's agency, has denounced the abduction of four Sudanese drivers, working for a team of engineers in Darfur, and has called for the immediate release of the men and their equipment.
Unidentified gunmen stopped the convoy from the state water corporation in North Darfur on Thursday and hijacked the drivers and a drilling rig intended to provide clean water.

UNICEF's country representative in Sudan said it is unacceptable that the employees of the State Water Corporation should be targeted in this way.

The corporation is UNICEF's main counterpart in providing water and sanitation services across northern Sudan, including Darfur.

The agency demanded that all humanitarian workers be allowed to operate with safety and security in the Darfur region, where banditry has become increasingly frequent.
