Violent attacks have decreased significantly in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, says the latest report on human rights from the United Nations mission in the country. But the mission, known as UNAMI, warned that the extent to which the reduction might be sustainable was not clear. Civilians continue to be targeted by Sunni and Shi'a armed groups through suicide bombings, car bombs and other attacks, the report continued. Staffan di Mistura, the UN Special Envoy to Iraq, spoke to UN Radio's Reem Abaza about the 12th report of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq.
A doctor from Bangladesh discusses the problems of fistula in his country
Thoraya Obaid, the Executive Director of the UN Population Fund, UNFPA, has said thousands of Bangladeshi women die every year due to fistula caused by early marriage and early pregnancy. According to UNFPA, the average age of marriage for women in Bangladesh is 15 and motherhood and early childbirth are considered extremely important cultural obligations. Most women do not receive care during pregnancy; 92% of births occur at home. Consequently, says the organization, the likelihood of fistula is high. Ms. Corhenor Begum, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in Bangladesh, explains what a fistula is.
