World Bank chief calls for plan to fight hunger

There is a call for a "new deal" to combat hunger and malnutrition.

The call comes from World Bank President Robert D. Zoellick to advance development in the face of rising food and oil prices.Zoellick suggests this "new deal" should also focus on access to food supply and its interconnections with energy, climate change, investment, the marginalization of women and growth.

He adds that malnutrition is the Millennium Development Goal with the greatest multiplier effect and largest risk factor for kids under five.

"More than 20 per cent of maternal deaths are traced to malnutrition. And when impoverished families cut back, young girls are the first to lose out. Hunger and malnutrition are a cause, not just a result of poverty. A shift from traditional food aid to a broader concept of food and nutrition assistance must be part of this New Deal."

The World Bank estimates 33 countries around the world face potential social unrest because of soaring food and energy prices.
