VICTIM
ASSISTANCE & REHABILITATION
It’s estimated that 15,000 to 20,000
people are hurt by landmines and UXO every year-- many of them are
poor and many are children. Unfortunately, there are no accurate figures
because many landmine victims do not have access to medical treatment
in their communities. As a result, their injuries are not recorded.
Victim assistance for these “landmine survivors” is a
core component of mine action. Activities include emergency medical
care, physical rehabilitation, psychological support, and reintegration
into society. Find out who these victims are and who’s helping
them heal; and how their rights are protected by the Landmine Treaty.
