EUROPE
European Schoolnet,
an international partnership of 28 European Ministries of
Education, is organizing a Spring
Day event that will include the Earth Day tradition of
ringing bells in recognition that Spring Day is also Earth
Day. Since the spring equinox occurs on Saturday, March 20
in Europe (which is not a school day on the European continent)–
Spring Day in Europe will be officially kicked off on Tuesday,
23 March at 10:00 am (local time).
There will be a symbolic ringing of bells (hand bells, school
bells, recorded ringing, church bells, etc.) in spirit with
the UN Peace Bell followed by one minute of silence for peace.
Since ten countries -- Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary,
Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta
-- will join the European Union on 1 May 2004, schools will
celebrate Spring Day in Europe by discussing how the enlarged
European Union can contribute to peace in the world. Visit the

WHAT STUDENTS IN EUROPE
ARE DOING ON SPRING DAY
We are thrilled with excitement at
the thought that on this blessed Spring Day in Europe, bells
from every county will toll for peace, tolerance, and understanding
between nations. The children in the Ceramics Club at the Children’s
Palace, Constanta, Romania, are already at work making bells
with their own hands. Using clay, the symbol of earth, they
are crafting these little bells which will be offered to every
guest who will honour us with their presence. When they
ring they will announce not only the rebirth of nature but also
a new spring in the relationship between countries.

"The Czech Republic is
going to ring a symbolic bell on 23 March at 10 am. All students
will bring their own small bells and together with the school
bell will ring them three times. Then a discussion will follow.
The discussion will be focused on the importance of peace and
the contribution of our country to the rest of the world. We
will stress the values of solidarity, tolerance, and understanding
among cultures."

March 23, at 10 am, our pupils (age 4-7), from the 1st Preschool
Kato Souliou, in Marathon, Greece are going to ring a symbolic
bell three times. Then we will stay silent for one minute to
reflect on how peace can be the main value of an enlarged Europe
and how an enlarged Europe can contribute to bring peace to
the rest of the world."

"As
our school doesn't have a bell, we decided to ring a bell at
a nearby chapel. We are inviting the community to be present
there to join us. Afterwards we will observe a moment of silence
and come back to school to do other activities that we have
planned. It will be our contribute to the PEACE."

"For Spring Day, we'll take
part in the "Peace Bell" initiative. The signals
will be heard on the 23rd of March at 10 a.m. in our school.
We'll keep a moment of silence for peace. An exhibition of
drawings with the theme of peace will be organized and students
from different levels will talk about peace in Balkans, in
Europe and all over the world. A questionnaire will be given
to pupils to find out their opinions about what chance they
think peace has in a world of violence and wars. The results
will be discussed with the students."

"We - pupils and teachers
from the UNESCO ASPnet primary school Maksa Pletersnika in
Pisece, Slovenia - are planning to ring the Peace Bell on
Spring Day. We will bring different bells to school, write
peace graffiti and draw peace symbols on a big paper in the
front of the school, sing songs of peace in different languages
and dance some traditional dances - for peace, happiness,
joy and for fun. We will invite pupils and teachers from a
school in Bizeljsko to our school (they are in our neighborhood).
We will also draw postcards and send them to our friends in
different countries."

adventure trail in our school: "Journey in the new European
Union countries" after the peace bell is rung."

Romania and we will ring the Bells of Peace at 10 am on the
23rd of March.We will use music and hymns from different countries
and observe a moment of silence in this regard."

bells to school. During next week they will make bells out
of paper and colour them. After that we will do a presentation

The Rainbow kindergarten Vrtec Mavrica Izola in Izola, Slovenia
"We are planning workshops
on the 23rd and 24th of March to prepare our students to take
part in international exchanges. It is going to be lead by
two volunteers from France and Spain. We would prepare a big
symbolic peace bell and exactly at 10 am we will ring it.
We will inform local newspaper and other media."
