Break Stereotypes, Build Culture of Equality, Secretary-General Says, in Message for Women Ambassadors Conference

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message for the “Women in leadership:  through the lens of the public, private and media sectors” conference organized by the Association of Women Ambassadors, in Cascais, Portugal, today:

Women’s leadership can unlock transformational change.  But, globally, women have only about a quarter of all Parliament seats and top media jobs.

In news media worldwide, women are reduced to less than a quarter of all people seen, heard or read about.  In films, women have less than a third of all speaking roles.

We have to give more opportunities to interested, diverse and capable women.  We have to uphold laws and policies that promote gender balance.  Most of all, we have to break down stereotypes — and build up a culture of equality.

The United Nations is committed to advancing gender equality — and promoting women’s leadership in public life.

Thank you for examining this issue, which is critical to a life of dignity for all.
