Activities of Secretary-General in Switzerland, 29-30 March

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, accompanied by Madam Ban Soon-taek, flew on Tuesday, 29 March, from Tunis, Tunisia, to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level meeting on Global Responsibility Sharing for Syrian Refugees.

In his remarks opening the meeting on Wednesday, 30 March, the Secretary-General stressed the need for an exponential increase in global solidarity in order to give hope to the millions of Syrian women, men and children who have been forced from their homes and their communities.  (See Press Release SG/SM/17635.)

In a joint press conference with the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, he said that measures to control the entry of refugees must safeguard the human rights and dignity of each individual person.

The Secretary-General left Geneva that afternoon for Stockholm, Sweden, to deliver the Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture.
