Secretary-General Submits Third Report of Joint Investigative Mechanism for Chemical Weapons Prohibition to Security Council

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General submitted the third report of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons-United Nations Joint Investigative Mechanism to the Security Council today, pursuant to resolution 2235 (2015).  The report outlines the in-depth investigation into the nine selected cases and provides the findings, assessments and conclusions by the Leadership Panel.  The methods of work and the investigation of the specific cases are described in the report’s 10 Annexes.

The Secretary-General is looking forward to the Security Council’s consideration of the report, which is expected on 30 August.  The report will be available publicly shortly thereafter.

The Secretary-General expresses his appreciation to the Leadership Panel and the staff of the Joint Investigative Mechanism, as well as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the Office for Disarmament Affairs for their continued support to the Mechanism, as well as to Member States for their assistance to the Mechanism, including financial support.
