Stockholm Hosts United Nations Seminar on Assistance to Palestinian People, 19-20 May

The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will convene the United Nations Seminar on Assistance to the Palestinian People at the 7A Odenplan Conference Centre in Stockholm, Sweden, on 19 and 20 May under the theme “Agenda 2030:  Paving the way towards a peaceful, independent and sustainable State of Palestine”.

By organizing the event, the Committee aims to review the challenges and constraints of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals by the State of Palestine under the Israeli occupation.  The Seminar will further look at ways to build resilient and sustainable economic growth while addressing humanitarian needs.  Long-term investment in women and young people as the keys to building a peaceful and inclusive society will also be discussed, and finally, experts will focus on mobilizing international solidarity and partnerships for development.

The opening session will begin on at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 19 May, in the Loke Conference Room, with statements delivered by high-level representatives of the host country, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the State of Palestine, as well as Committee Vice-Chairman Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez (Cuba).  The second part of the opening session will provide an opportunity for short statements by representatives of Governments, intergovernmental organizations and the United Nations system.

In the afternoon and on 20 May, the Seminar will continue with plenary sessions during which Palestinian and international experts will make presentations on specific issues.  Each plenary will have a discussion period.

A press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. on 19 May, and registered media representatives will also have the opportunity to arrange for individual interviews with members of the Committee delegation and participating speakers.  On 20 May, the Palestinian documentary Speed Sisters will be screened during the midday recess.

Registration for the Seminar will begin on 16 May and continue throughout its duration.  The Division for Palestinian Rights will provide regular Seminar updates, including the programme and press releases, on its website at www.un.org/depts/dpa/qpal/calendar.htm, on Twitter at www.twitter.com/unispal and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/events/1719787884944792/.
