Adopting without Vote Two Decisions, Economic and Social Council Sets Dates for United Nations Forum on Forests, Themes for Future Sessions

The Economic and Social Council today adopted two draft decisions, respectively, on the dates and venue for the meetings of the United Nations Forum on Forests in 2017, and on the themes for the Council’s 2017, 2018 and 2019 sessions.

Adopting without a vote on the draft decision, “Dates and venue for the meetings of the United Nations Forum on Forests in 2017” (document E/2017/L.8), the 54-nation organ decided that the Forum’s meetings would be held at the United Nations Headquarters from 16 to 20 January 2017.  It also decided that the main part of the Forum’s twelfth session would be held from 1 to 5 May 2017.

The Council then adopted without a vote the draft decision, “Themes for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 sessions of the Economic and Social Council” (document E/2017/L.9).  By the text, those themes included “Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions through promoting sustainable development, expanding opportunities and addressing related challenges”; “From global to local:  supporting sustainable and resilient societies in urban and rural communities”; and “One world for all:  empowering people to build equal and inclusive societies”.

The Economic and Social Council will reconvene at a date and time to be announced.
