On the morning of Sunday, 18 October, the Secretary-General visited Lomnický Peak.  At 2,634 metres it is the second highest summit in the High Tatras range in the east of Slovakia.  He was briefed on the solar observation work undertaken at the observatory based on the Peak.

The Secretary-General then travelled by road from Bratislava to the Humanitarian Centre in Gabčíkovo, which houses up to 500 Syrians who are seeking asylum in Austria and are being accommodated in Slovakia while their claims are processed.  The Secretary-General met with some of the refugees and spoke to media along with Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák and Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner.  In his remarks, the Secretary-General urged all leaders to show their global solidarity and compassionate leadership.  That same evening he returned to Bratislava.
