Secretary-General Welcomes Peaceful First Round of Guinea’s Presidential Election, Urges Stakeholders to Refrain from Statements that May Spark Violence

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the peaceful conduct of the first round of the presidential election in Guinea on 11 October.

As Guinea awaits the final results, the Secretary-General encourages all political leaders and national stakeholders to maintain the peaceful atmosphere that prevailed on election day and to refrain from any statements that may lead to violence or unrest.

The Secretary-General reiterates his call on national stakeholders to resolve any disputes that might arise peacefully, through established legal procedures.
