Following Death of Peacekeeper in Haiti, Secretary-General Expresses Condolences, Calls for Swift Investigation

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

A Chilean peacekeeper serving in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) died of gunshot wounds when his vehicle came under fire in Ouanaminthe in the North East Department on 13 April.

The Secretary-General expresses his sincere condolences to the family of the peacekeeper who was killed as well as to the Government and the people of Chile.

The Secretary-General calls for a swift investigation and urges the Haitian authorities to do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice.
