United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs Announces ‘Poster for Peace’ Contest

NEW YORK, 23 October (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — With the aim of increasing awareness of the need for nuclear disarmament, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs is sponsoring a global United Nations “Poster for Peace” contest, inviting citizens all over the world to join in and use their artistic talents to help promote a world free of nuclear weapons.  The contest is open from 24 October 2015 to 24 January 2016.  The three top winners will be announced on 5 March 2016 and awarded monetary prizes.

The contest coincides with the commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly resolution, adopted on 24 January 1946.  That resolution established a commission to formulate proposals for the elimination of atomic weapons and of all other major weapons of mass destruction.  Since its adoption, every United Nations Secretary-General has supported this goal, and while there have been significant reductions in nuclear arsenals, many thousands of nuclear weapons remain.

Participating in the United Nations “Poster for Peace” contest gives citizens from every country the opportunity to be counted as a member of the global community supporting disarmament and the United Nations in its work to eliminate nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction.  As Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said,:  “Nuclear disarmament is one of the greatest legacies we can pass on to future generations.”

The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, and its partners in this endeavor — the Office of the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the United Nations Foundation, the World Federation of the United Nations and the United Nations Academic Impact — encourage all participants to share this contest widely within their communities, so that every voice is heard.
