Secretary-General Condemns Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Somalia, Reaffirms United Nations Support for Peace, Stability

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns yesterday’s attack on the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) base camp in the Mogadishu International Airport, which resulted in the death of a number of AMISOM soldiers and civilian contractors.  The Secretary-General conveys his sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives, and wishes a swift recovery for the injured.

The Secretary-General commends AMISOM for its quick response to the attack. He is relieved that all United Nations staff are safe and expresses his solidarity with AMISOM and United Nations personnel working for peace in Somalia.  The Secretary-General reaffirms the United Nations resolve to support the Government and people of Somalia in their continuing journey toward peace and stability.
