Deputy Secretary-General to Call for Support in Meeting Peacebuilding Fund’s

$100 Million Target at High-Level Stakeholders’ Forum, 24 June

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson will open the fourth annual High-level Stakeholders Meeting of the Peacebuilding Fund on Tuesday, 24 June, as part of United Nations Peacebuilding week.  During the event, taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, he is expected to appeal for continued support from Member States to help meet the Fund’s annual contribution target of $ 100 million.

Judy Cheng-Hopkins, Assistant Secretary-General for the Peacebuilding Fund, will provide an overview of its engagement and achievements since 2012, and Member States will have an opportunity to air their views on its performance.  The Meeting will also provide stakeholders with the Fund’s next business plan for the period of 2014–2016.  Other speakers will include Kalifa Gassama Diaby, Minister for Human Rights of Guinea, and Jan Knutsson, who chairs the Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on the Peacebuilding Fund.

Together with the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Support Office, the Fund was established to support countries emerging from conflict, and has enabled early reaction to conflict-affected countries.  It has made new commitments to Guinea, Central African Republic, Yemen, Somalia and Burundi, among others.

Today’s high-level meeting follows on the heels of the first annual session of the Peacebuilding Commission, on Monday, 23 June, which explored issues affecting peacebuilding activities and ways to enhance support for post-conflict countries.
