Secretary-General, Addressing World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics,

Calls for Stronger Partnerships in Developing Countries

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message to the twentieth World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics, in Seoul, on 23 June:

Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It is an honour to greet this opening of the twentieth World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics.

Your association plays a pivotal role in promoting research and development in this important field.  People around the world are living longer, healthier lives, thanks to advances in health and well-being.

This means more experienced workers and more custodians of culture and heritage.  It also creates challenges, putting pressure on institutions, such as health care and pension systems.  We look to your expertise in forging sustainable solutions.

I encourage the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics to continue to strengthen partnerships and expand your work with members in developing countries.  We at the United Nations value our strong collaborative relationship with you.  Let us work together to intensify efforts to fully implement the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.

Thank you once again for coming together in Seoul for this World Congress, and for all your work to improve the quality of life of elderly people.

I wish you great success.  Thank you.
