Secretary-General Designates Eduardo Rojas-Briales as Commissioner-General


for United Nations Participation in Expo 2015

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has designated Eduardo Rojas-Briales as Commissioner-General for the Organization’s participation in Expo 2015, in Milan, Italy.  Mr. Rojas-Briales is the Assistant Director-General for Forestry at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).


“I believe that Mr. Rojas-Briales’ experience and early engagement in this endeavour will result in the effective participation of the United Nations system at the Milan Expo,” the Secretary-General said.


The theme of the Milan Expo 2015, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, is in line with the United Nations focus on food security, nutrition, sustainable development and climate change.  The international exposition runs from 1 May to 31 October 2015.


FAO, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP), and Bioversity International, will lead the effort to showcase the activities and best practices of the United Nations in fields related to the themes of the Expo, as well as provide thematic experts and support in a new and innovative approach to reaching out to the international community and the wider public.


In addition to serving as Assistant Director-General at FAO, Mr. Rojas-Briales is the current Chair of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, an informal arrangement comprising 14 international organizations, agencies and secretariats that promote the sustainable management of all types of forests.
