New Permanent Representative of Lesotho Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Lesotho to the United Nations, Kelebone Albert Maope, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Until his latest appointment, Mr. Maope was the Proportional Representation Member of Parliament since May 2012.  He was Member of Parliament for the Seqōnōka Constituency No. 27 from 1998 to 2012, and a Member of the Senate from June 1993 until July 1998.

Mr. Maope’s distinguished Government service includes:  Minister for Justice and of Law and Constitutional Affairs, 2001; Minister for Finance and Economic Development (1999-2001); Minister for Agriculture (1998-1999); Minister for Foreign Affairs (1995-1998); and Minister for Justice and of Law and Constitutional Affairs (1993 to 1995).

As Minister for Law, Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs and of Justice and Prisons between 1990 and 1993, Mr. Maope also held the portfolio of Attorney-General, a position he previously occupied from 1986 to 1990, while serving as Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Law, Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs.

Mr. Maope had an extensive legal career in both the public and private sectors, as well as a distinguished tenure at in the Faculty of Law at the National University of Lesotho.  He holds Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees from the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland in association with Edinburgh University, and the University of London, respectively.

Born on 15 September 1945, Mr Maope is married and has two children.
