With Constituent Assembly Deadline Approaching in Nepal, Secretary-General

Appeals for Urgent Efforts to Preserve Constitution-Making Process

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

In view of the very short time remaining before the 27 May 2012 Constituent Assembly deadline, the Secretary-General appeals to Nepali political parties and other actors to make urgent efforts to preserve the constitution-making process and the gains they have made thus far.  The Secretary-General is concerned about the prospect of the term of the Constituent Assembly expiring without the adoption of a constitution that meets the expectations and aspirations of the people of Nepal.

He appeals to the parties to remain within the framework of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Constituent Assembly.  He also appeals to all for calm and restraint.
