Secretary-General appoints Wu Hongbo of China Under-Secretary-General

 

for Economic and Social Affairs

 


For the position of Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has selected Wu Hongbo of China, who since 2009 has been Ambassador of China to Germany.


Mr. Wu has over 30 years of high-level experience, including close collaboration in international conferences and with multilateral organizations.  In his various portfolios, he has been involved in his country’s contribution to the implementation of the United Nations conventions on environment and development as well as China’s report on its progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.  Mr. Wu is expected to bring to bear his rich background and outstanding skills in negotiations and in forging consensus to enable the Department of Economic and Social Affairs to address the critical development challenges of the future.  He is also expected to provide leadership to the Department of Economic and Social Affairs in support of the Secretary-General’s efforts to secure effective follow-up to Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development and play a key role in working with Member States in formulating the United Nations development agenda beyond 2015.
