Headquarters to Host Round Table on 23 April as United Nations Partners

with Israel in Observing 50 Years since Adolf Eichmann Trial

The United Nations, in partnership with the State of Israel, will mark the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, the mastermind behind the systematic mass deportation and murder of European Jews during the Holocaust, with a round-table discussion on 23 April in the North Lawn Building.

Titled “The Trial of Adolf Eichmann:  50 Years Later”, the round table will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Economic and Social Council Chamber of the North Lawn Building at United Nations Headquarters.  Panellists will explore the psychological, social and legal aspects of the trial, including its influence on justice and accountability in the twenty-first century.

Minister Yossi Peled, a Holocaust survivor and retired general, will open the event.  Other speakers will include Amos Hausner, an attorney and sonofGideon Hausner; Mark S. Ellis, Executive Director of the International Bar Association in London; Deborah E. Lipstadt, a professor at Emory University in Atlanta and author of The Eichmann Trial; andElie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, United Nations Messenger of Peace and human rights activist, who covered the trial for the newspaper The Forward.  Ramu Damodaran, Deputy Director for Partnerships and Public Engagement in the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information, will moderate the discussion.

The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme was established by General Assembly resolution 60/7 in 2006 to further education about and remembrance of the Holocaust to help prevent future acts of genocide. Its multifaceted programme includes online and print educational products, seminars, a film series and the annual worldwide observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust each 27 January.
