Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of Tuvalu Presents Credentials

Aunese Makoi Simati, the new Permanent Representative of Tuvalu to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

From 2010 until his latest appointment, Mr. Simati was High Commissioner (Ambassador) to Fiji, taking up that post after serving from mid-2009 to January 2010 as Permanent Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Prime Minister.

Between 2006 and 2009, he was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Industries, having held the same rank in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Rural Development in 2005.  From 2003 to 2004, he was Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Transport.

Mr. Simati was Senior Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Industries from 1999 to 2003, Acting Director in that Ministry’s Department of Planning between 1994 and 1999, and Senior Economic Adviser in the same Department from 1993 to 1994, having joined it in 1991 as a Rural Physical Planner.

Mr. Simati holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in social science (economics and geography), as well as a Bachelor of Social Science in economics, all from Waikato University in New Zealand.

Born on 22 April 1967, he is married.
