New Permanent Representative of Maldives Presents Credentials

Ahmed Sareer, the new Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.


Until his appointment on 10 December, Mr. Sareer was the Chargé d’affaires, with the rank of Ambassador, at his country’s Permanent Mission in New York.  In November 2011, he was nominated as Ambassador to the United States, having been High Commissioner (Ambassador) to Bangladesh between December 2009 and February 2012.


Mr. Sareer served as Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom between June 2008 and May 2009, having been Chargé d’affaires at his country’s mission to the European Union in Brussels from March to June 2008.  He was a Counsellor, and later Deputy High Commissioner, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, between July 2006 and March 2008.


Appointed Director, and later Assistant Director General, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between June 2003 and July 2006, Mr. Sareer represented his country as Director at the Secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation in Kathmandu, Nepal, from June 2000 until May 2003.  Between January 1994 and May 2000, he was Assistant Director, and later Deputy Director for Foreign Relations, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, taking 15 months off to pursue higher studies.


In an extensive diplomatic career, Mr. Sareer also saw earlier service as Second Secretary/Chargé d’affaires at the Permanent Mission in New York, from September 1992 to December 1993; Assistant Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (February to September 1992); and Third Secretary in Colombo (April 1988 to February 1989).  He joined the Foreign Ministry in February 1986, serving as a Desk Officer until February 1988.


Mr. Sareer holds a Master of Arts in foreign affairs and trade and a bachelor’s degree in social sciences, respectively from Monash University and the University of Canberra, both in Australia.


Born on 28 August 1965, he is married and has four children.
