From 2010 until his new appointment, Mr. Alam provided development evaluation consulting services to the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Evaluation Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and PricewaterhouseCoopers.  Concurrently, he taught development evaluation as an adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in New York City.

Those activities followed a 34-year career with UNDP, both at headquarters and in the field, which culminated in Mr. Alam’s appointment as Deputy Director of the Programme’s Evaluation Office, a position he held from June 2000 to July 2009.  He was previously Evaluation Adviser from April 1997 to May 2000, prior to which he served as Senior Evaluation and Planning Officer in the Office of Evaluation and Strategic Planning between October 1993 and July 1997.

After joining UNDP as a Programme Officer in Bangladesh in 1975, Mr. Alam represented the agency in various capacities and several countries, including Malaysia (1984‑1987), Indonesia (1987‑1990) and Fiji (1991‑1993).

Mr. Alam holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University and a master’s degree in development economics from the University of Dhaka, where he also earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.  He is a Life Member and Director of the International Development Evaluation Association (IDEAS).
