Secretary-General Reappoints Edmond Mulet of Guatemala Assistant

 

Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the reappointment of Edmond Mulet of Guatemala as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.  The Secretary-General expresses his gratitude to Atul Khare of India for his more than one year of service in that position.


Having previously been Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations from 2007 to 2010, Mr. Mulet most recently served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), where he was deployed in the immediate aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake.


He led the United Nations contribution to the country’s recovery, from the provision of humanitarian assistance to reconstruction to the recent holding of presidential elections.  He previously served as Special Representative for Haiti from 2005 to 2007.


Mr. Mulet held various positions in his country as a diplomat, member of Congress, journalist and legal counsellor.  He was educated in Guatemala, Canada, the United States and Switzerland.


Born in Guatemala in 1951, Mr. Mulet is married and has two children.
