Secretary-General Appoints Aïchatou Mindaoudou Souleymane of Niger Deputy Joint


Special Representative (Political), AU-UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Chairperson of the African Union, Jean Ping, have appointed Aïchatou Mindaoudou Souleymane of Niger as Deputy Joint Special Representative (Political) in the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).


Ms. Mindaoudou will replace Henry K. Anyidoho of Ghana, to whom the Secretary-General expresses appreciation for his tireless dedication and invaluable service during his tenure in UNAMID.


Having served most recently as Minster for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation for 10 years, Ms. Mindaoudou brings to her new position a long and distinguished career with the Government of Niger.  She previously served as Minister for Social Development, Population and Promotion of Women’s Rights.


Ms. Mindaoudou has headed several delegations from Niger to world conferences and summits, including the World Conference on Women, held in Beijing, China, in 1995.  She also led the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) electoral observation delegation to Benin.  She has worked closely with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the elaboration of reports on human development in Niger and also with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on issues related to gender and development.


Born in Niger in 1959, Ms. Mindaoudou earned both her PhD and master’s in law at the University of Paris in France, and her bachelor’s degree at the University of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire.
