Secretary-General Appoints John Hendra of Canada Assistant Secretary-General

 

for Policy and Programme, UN Women

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon today announced the appointment of John Hendra of Canada Assistant Secretary-General for Policy and Programme at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).


In this position within UN Women, Mr. Hendra will be responsible for the leadership and management of the Bureau supporting policy analysis, research and training, programme management and oversight.  He will also serve as one of the two Deputies to the Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet.


Mr. Hendra brings a wealth of experience to this position, including over 20 years experience in development programming and conducting development policy dialogue with Member States at the highest levels.


Mr. Hendra’s career in the United Nations system includes experience in three different regions where he served for 13 years as United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Viet Nam, United Republic of Tanzania and Latvia.  In Viet Nam, he led a comprehensive United Nations reform effort at country level — the “Delivering as One” initiative — designed to enhance the coherence, effectiveness and efficiency of United Nations development support.


Mr. Hendra was the Deputy Director of UNDP’s Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships from 2000 to 2002, where he was responsible for helping manage relationships with donors, the private sector, civil society and foundations.


Mr. Hendra has a master’s degree in development studies from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in Political Studies.


Born in 1960, he is married and has two daughters.
