Security Council Press Statement on Haiti

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Gérard Araud ( France):

The members of the Security Council congratulate the Haitian people on the peaceful conduct of the electoral process and welcome the inauguration of a new Haitian Government.  They encourage all political actors in Haiti to resolve any remaining electoral disputes through transparent and efficient legal means in order to ensure that the results reflect the will of the Haitian people.

The members of the Security Council deeply appreciate the efforts of MINUSTAH’s [United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti] personnel, who provided critical logistical and security support to the Haitian authorities throughout the conduct of the electoral process, and thereby helped ensure a successful outcome.

The members of the Security Council encourage Haiti’s new leaders to remain focused on the critical tasks of rebuilding the country, ensuring respect for the rule of law, and ensuring a future of peace, stability and prosperity for all Haitians.

The members of the Security Council assure all Haitians that the international community remains steadfast in its commitment to support the efforts of the Haitian authorities in dealing with the challenges they face.
