New Permanent Representative of Mozambique Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations, António Gumende, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.


Prior to his appointment, Mr. Gumende served as High Commissioner for Mozambique in the United Kingdom since May 2002.  During that tenure, he also served as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Secretariat from 2006 to 2008.


Since 2002, he has been Chairman of the AGM MediaCoop Jornalistas Associados.  For five years before that, he was Executive Editor of the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC) in the Mozambican capital, Maputo.  During the same period, he served as Executive Chairman of MediaCoop Jornalistas Associados SCRL, Mozambique.


Mr. Gumende was Managing Editor/Business Editor of Southern African Political Economy Series of SAPES Trust, Harare, Zimbabwe from 1996 to 1997.  Before that, he was Staff Writer/Business Editor of the Southern African Economist, Harare (1990-96), and News Writer/Reporter and Business Editor with the Mozambique News Agency (AIM) from 1984 to 1990.  Between 1988 and 1997, Mr. Gumende worked as correspondent for various news organizations, including the Italian News Agency ANSA (1988-1990); Southern African Economist (1988-1990); Harare correspondent for Channel Africa Radio, Portuguese Service (1994-1997); Harare correspondent for MediaFax Daily and Savana Weekly, Mozambique (1993-1997); Harare correspondent for Lusa News Agency, Portugal (1993-1997); and as Harare correspondent for A Bola newspaper of Portugal (1994-1997).


The new Mozambican envoy has a Master’s degree in Financial Economics from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (2010); a Post Graduate Certificate in Economics, Birkbeck College, University of London, 2006;  Diploma in Economics (Open University, London, 2005); Master’s in Business Administration (Nottingham Trent University – 1999); Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies (Nottingham Trent University – 1998); Certified Diploma in Accounting and Finance (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK – 1996); and Diploma in Journalism, Mozambique (1984).


Born on 1 January 1961, Mr. Gumende is married with four children.  He is fluent in Portuguese and English.
