On the first day of his visit to Asia, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, in the morning of 26 October for a meeting with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

In a lengthy encounter, the two leaders discussed issues related to United Nations-Thailand cooperation, including Thailand’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations, Myanmar, United Nations-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation, and the ongoing national reconciliation and human rights issues.  Following the meeting with Prime Minister Vejjajiva, the Secretary-General spoke to the press.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-General addressed the United Nations country team at a town hall meeting at the headquarters of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
