Security Council Press Statement on Deadly Darfur Attack

The following Security Council press statement on the deaths of three peacekeepers in Darfur was issued today by Council President Claude Heller (Mexico):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on UNAMID peacekeepers in Darfur on 21 June, which resulted in the deaths of three Rwandan soldiers and left another seriously wounded.  The Council noted with concern that this followed a deadly attack on UNAMID on 7 May in which two peacekeepers were killed.

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks, as well as to the Government of Rwanda.  They encouraged the Government of Sudan to ensure that all the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice and stressed that there must be an end to impunity for those that attack peacekeepers.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNAMID and called on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission.
