Security Council Press Statement on African Union-United Nations

Hybrid Operation in Darfur

The following Security Council press statement on the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) was read out today by Council President Michel Kafando (Burkina Faso):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on UNAMID peacekeepers in Darfur on 4 and 5 December, which resulted in the death of five Rwandan soldiers.

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks as well as to the Government of Rwanda.  They took note of the action taken already by the Government of Sudan and encouraged it to ensure that all the perpetrators are swiftly identified and brought to justice.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNAMID and their call on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission, including to secure the release of the two staff held hostage.
