pledges support for constructive efforts to promote stabilization

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General is deeply concerned over the mounting political and security tensions in Guinea-Bissau.  This situation occurs at a time when preparations for legislative elections in November are under way and progress is being made to engage the international community to help meet the country’s priority peacebuilding goals, including its fight against drug trafficking.

The Secretary-General calls on all national stakeholders to work cooperatively and peacefully together in the national interest and in full respect for the rule of law.  He reaffirms the readiness of the United Nations to continue to support any constructive efforts that the Government and people of Guinea-Bissau undertake towards promoting peace and development and the stabilization of their country.
