SECRETARY-GENERAL TO APPOINT MAJOR GENERAL KIM MOON HWA OF REPUBLIC OF KOREA


CHIEF MILITARY OBSERVER OF UN MILITARY OBSERVER GROUP IN INDIA AND PAKISTAN

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has informed the Security Council of his intention to appoint Major General Kim Moon Hwa of the Republic of Korea Chief Military Observer in the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).


Major General Kim will replace Major General Dragutin Repinc of Croatia.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Major General Repinc for his exemplary and highly professional service in UNMOGIP.


Major General Kim will bring to the job his extensive experience in military planning and peacekeeping activities, including his direct knowledge of UNMOGIP, as he previously served as Deputy Chief Military Observer for the mission from 1995 to 1997.  Major General Kim has had an extensive and distinguished military career since joining the Army of the Republic of Korea in 1976.  He served in a number of positions, including as Regiment Commander in the 17th Infantry Division and Chief of Operations in the Third Field Army.


He also served as Chief of Planning for the Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference and Pacific Armies Management Seminar from 2003 to 2004, and as Chief of Operations in the Combined Forces Command.  In 2004, Major General Kim was appointed Commanding General of the 17th Infantry Division.  Since 2006, he has been Director-General of Operations Planning in the Joint Chiefs of Staff.


Major General Kim was born in 1953 in Inchon.   He attended the Army Staff College and National Defence University in the Republic of Korea, as well as the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
