Biographical Note


FRANK MAJOOR of NETHERLANDS CHAIRMAN OF THIRD COMMITTEE


Frank Majoor, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the United Nations, was elected Chairman of the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) on 4 June.  (See Press Release GA/10714.)


Mr. Majoor has served as his country’s Permanent Representative since October 2005.  Prior to his appointment, he served since 2000 as Secretary-General of the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  He was the Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large from 1999 to 2000. 


A career diplomat, Mr. Majoor has served his country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry in numerous capacities, including Director of the Security Policy Department (1993-1997); Special Adviser on Political Security Matters, Deputy Director of the Atlantic Cooperation and Security Affairs Department (1992-1993); Assistant to the Director-General of Political Affairs (1985-1986); and Head, Environmental Affairs Section, Economic Cooperation Department (1982-1985).


From 1986 to 1992, he was posted to the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands to the United Nations in New York, serving as the Minister Plenipotentiary (economic and financial matters) from 1988 to 1992, and as First Secretary (political matters) from 1986 to 1988.


Between 1997 and 1999, Mr. Majoor was his country’s Ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland.  He also served in his country’s embassies in Bonn (1979-1982) and Dar es Salaam (1977-1979).


Mr. Majoor holds a master’s degree in civil law from the University of Leiden.  He received diplomatic training at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute for International Relations in The Hague.


Born on 1 April 1949, Mr. Majoor is married and has two children.
