SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS YOUSSEF MAHMOUD EXECUTIVE REPRESENTATIVE FOR BURUNDI,


HEAD OF UNITED NATIONS INTEGRATED OFFICE IN BURUNDI

 


On 22 December 2006, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed his Deputy Special Representative for Burundi, Youssef Mahmoud of Tunisia, as his Executive Representative for Burundi and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB), which was established on 1 January 2007, following the conclusion of the mandate of the United Nations Operation in Burundi (ONUB) on 31 December 2006.


Mr. Mahmoud, who also serves as United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator, as well as the United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, was appointed in September 2006 as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Burundi.  He has had a long and distinguished career with the United Nations, serving previously as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana, as a Director in the Department of Political Affairs, as well as with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) and in the Office of Human Resources and Management in New York.


Prior to joining the United Nations in 1981, Mr. Mahmoud worked as an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Tunis, Tunisia, and as Chairman of the English Department of the Bourguiba Institute of Modern Languages in Tunis.


Mr. Mahmoud is married and has two daughters.
