SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The following Security Council press statement on the Democratic Republic of the Congo was read out today by Council President Dumisani S. Kumalo ( South Africa):

The members of the Security Council express their serious concern about the violent clashes that erupted today in the centre of the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kinshasa.

The members of the Security Council call upon both parties to immediately cease the exchange of fire, act responsibly and resolve outstanding issues solely by peaceful means.

The members of the Security Council are particularly concerned about the spillover of the violence on the civilian population, including children.

The members of the Security Council support the efforts of the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) to appease the situation, and encourage MONUC to address this security challenge with a view to safeguarding the ongoing political process.
