‘COURAGE FOR PEACE’ EXHIBITION TO OPEN AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS

A photographic exhibition entitled “Courage for Peace” will open with a formal ceremony and reception on Tuesday, 29 May 2007 at 5:30 p.m. in the South Gallery of the General Assembly Visitors’ Lobby.  The exhibit is presented in observance of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

Statements at the opening will be made by Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations; John McNee, Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations and Felix Ani Aniokoye, Deputy Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations.

This interactive multimedia exhibition will use photos, videos and other publicity materials to highlight the work being done by peacekeepers all over the world.  It will feature stories focusing on individuals currently serving in United Nations operations in the field, personalizing their work and acquainting audiences with the day-to-day lives of a few of the courageous men and women who serve in the cause of peace.

United Nations Peacekeepers Day was established in 2002 with the adoption of General Assembly resolution 57/129, which selected 29 May as the official commemorative day for the global community to acknowledge the men and women from 115 countries who serve as United Nations peacekeepers.

This exhibition is organized by the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, in cooperation with the Department of Public Information, and with the generous support of the Permanent Missions of Canada and Nigeria to the United Nations.
