SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS LUIZ CARLOS DA COSTA OF BRAZIL AS PRINCIPAL DEPUTY


SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR UNITED NATIONS STABILIZATION MISSION IN HAITI

 


United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of Luiz Carlos da Costa as his Principal Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).  Mr. da Costa will assume his responsibilities on 15 November.


Mr. da Costa has had a long and distinguished career with the United Nations, most recently having served since September 2005 as Deputy Special Representative for Operations and Rule of Law for the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).


Previously, Mr. da Costa was the Director of the Logistics Support Division of the Office of Mission Support in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York (June 2003 - August 2005) and the Director of Administration at the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) (July 2000 - August 2001).  He also served as Principal Officer for Change Management in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations (August 2001 - November 2002).


From November 1992 to June 2000, Mr. da Costa was Chief of Personnel Management and Support Service in the Field Administration and Logistics Division of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York.  Prior to that, Mr. da Costa served in a number of other positions at United Nations Headquarters, including with the Office of Human Resources Management and the then Department of Conference Services, having joined the Organization in 1969. 


Mr. da Costa is married and has two daughters.
