Security Council Press Statement on Fiji

The following Security Council press statement on Fiji was delivered today by Council President Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser ( Qatar):

The members of the Security Council are gravely concerned about the situation in Fiji, where the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has announced that the military has taken over the executive authority from the democratically elected Government of Prime Minister Qarase.

The members of the Security Council strongly hope that restraint will be exercised and a peaceful solution to the current situation will be achieved in accordance with Fiji’s Constitution, and that the democratically elected Government will be reinstated as early as possible.

The members of the Security Council welcome and support efforts by the Pacific Islands Forum and other regional and international entities to resolve this situation in a peaceful and lasting manner.

The members of the Security Council also encourage the Secretary-General to work together with those entities and Fiji’s regional and international partners to restore Fiji’s legitimate Government.

The members of the Security Council continue to follow the situation.
