GOVERNMENT OF MEXICO WORLD’S FIRST TO ADHERE TO UNITED NATIONS’

GLOBAL COMPACT FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

MEXICO CITY, 9 June (UN Information Centre) -- Upon the conclusion today of the launching in Mexico of the United Nations Global Compact, President Vicente Fox announced the adherence by the Federal Government and all of its agencies to the principles of this global initiative.

Thierry Lemaresquier, Resident Coordination of the United Nations system in Mexico, declared that “the United Nations welcomes the commitment made by President Fox on behalf of the Federal Government of Mexico, to adhere to the Global Compact”.  With this, he said, “Mexico is today the first country in the world to assume such commitment at a governmental level.  This presents a unique opportunity to discuss the practical application of the principles of social responsibility at public institutions and to produce concrete solutions on the four pillars of the Global Compact, which are:  human rights, labour conditions, environment, and the fight against corruption.”

The Global Compact is an initiative by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, which incorporates into one big international alliance business corporations and organizations committed to the principles of social responsibility.

At today’s launch in Mexico City, more than 200 companies in the country adhered to the Global Compact, thus, bringing up the number of companies and organizations in Latin America committed to the initiative to more than 600.
