PRESS STATEMENT ON SUDAN BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

The following press statement by Security Council President Jeremy Greenstock (United Kingdom) was made on 24 July:

Members of the Council welcomed the signing on 22 July of the Machakos Protocol between the Government of the Sudan and the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement, which represents a significant breakthrough on major issues and a major step towards the realization of a just and lasting peace in the Sudan.  In connection with that signing, members of the Council paid tribute first of all to the parties, but also to the President of Kenya, Daniel arap Moi, and his special envoy, Lieutenant General Sumbeiywo, on behalf of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), for their efforts in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in the Sudan.  Members of the Council appealed to the parties to continue to work for a successful conclusion of a global and definitive agreement during the course of 2002.
